Day 23 of The Trip — Taos, NM

I was glad to know the pass was halfway done! Now all I have to do is to get us down!

Doesn’t look like much from the outside but the food was awesome. We had theSpaniard Steak for the main course but the chicharonnes for starters were out of sight!

Even on the COntinental Divide Charlotte finds someone selling jewlery! She was “on top of the world”, literally1

John & Betty Jones at their home in Aspen, CO. Our friends for over 30 years.

Leaving Aspen, CO we headed straight up the pass and the Continental Divide. For this old flat-lander, going up that narrow road to the 12,799 foot summit.was a trip! I had to have Charlotte pry my hands off of the steering wheel of the old truck when we got to the bottom on the other side. We rolled into Taos at 5:00 p.m. We had reservations made at La Meze here in Taos at the recommendation of Chris Neal.
It was awesome! Thanks Chris! We are going to try to have lunch at the Love Apple tomorrow. That’s the other place he recommended.

Just an observation:  Maybe it’s just me but it seems like the virtual hitch hikers all got out once we started going up in altitude.  Maybe they are afraid of mountain passes as much as I am.  Maybe everybody got out and decided to hike down.  Beats me.  Is there a virtual rider still on board?  Let me hear from you!

  1. Dude, I am still standing back here at the artichoke stand on the side of the road somewhere in CA? I loved the “pamper me silly” attitude and all, but man, I ran completely out of money about 11 days back. Aspen? No way.
Be safe and I’ll see you back in Texas sometime soon……..I hope. Wow, I hate artichokes.

    • I thought it got awful quiet once we left for San Francisco. Dude, I’m doing a little calculating and in my conservative estimate, with atichokes going for 10 for a $1.00, if you are tapped out, you’ve gone through several cases of artichokes! I bet you are getting a little burned out on them. The good news is you can walk down the road a little ways and get the same deal on avocados! With gas at $4.00 a gallon, we can’t afford to go back and pick you up. If you can make it back to WIlliams, you can probably make enough change cleaning RV windshields at those high-priced gas stations to buy a Greyhound ticket back to Houston. Keep us posted on your trip back home! Oh yeah, Capehart called dubs on your seat!

  2. I’m still back in the back, white knuckles and all. I had a hurricane scare that I had to take care of before it decided to move on to New Orleans and then I had a root canal. Haven’t got any sympathy yet from anyone. One of those cool ones would be pretty good about now if Sue will throw me one back here. That should take care of the pain and swelling.

    • Hey Capehart,
Glad to have you back on board. Edge got left behind at the artichoke road stand, so you can have his seat by the window. Sue, If you’re still holding onto some cold ones, throw one to Capehart. It sounds like he’s been through enough lately to deserve a cold bottle of Moose Drool Beer from the great state of Montana!
