Day 1 After The Trip — Chillin’ At My Digs

I think John Denver said it best, “Hey it’s good to be back home again!”.  After almost a month on the road, it sure feels good to enjoy the “home rituals”.  Some of which would be getting up at 2 or 3 in the morning and going into the living room and checking to see what good movies may be on.  Or, going to the refrigerator and opening the door and just standing there looking in for a few minutes to try and decide if there is anything in there you may want to try for a late night snack.  Or, maybe just get into the old trusty recliner and watch the big screen from between your two big toes.  And all of these activities are done while clad in boxers and an old worn out “wife beater” tee shirt.

I did notice it’s time to go grocery shopping.  The way I always tell is if I can open the door on the refrigerator and nothing falls out, it’s time to go shopping!  Jello Snacks and a few cans of whipping cream sure make the late night rituals a lot more fun!

Now here are these breath-taking statistics I promised from The Trip.

1.  We traveled 5,074 miles round trip.

2.  The total cost of gasoline was $1,041.51

3.  The cost of fuel per mile was $0.20.

4.  The old truck got a respectable 18.13 miles per gallon on the entire trip.

5.  The total gallons of gas bought was 279.93.

That was just about what we had calculated before the trip started.  I had figured we could do it for $1,000.00 in gas but we ran into Edge’s high-priced buddies in Williams, Arizona and that drove the cost up somewhat.

Well, I think I have found and removed all the dirty laundry that was crammed in every empty space in the truck.  Febreze has already contacted us about shooting a commercial in the truck cab.  Last I heard we were next up after Kazackistan wrestlers.  A little income from there would sure help offset the REAL COST of the trip which was Charlotte’s attempt to single-handedly revive the Indian jewelry market from Gallup, NM to the Continental Divide in Colorado, clean down to Taos, NM.  It finally came down to space in the truck.  If it didn’t have dirty laundry stuffed in it, it was full of Indian jewelry.

Like I said, it’s good to be back home again!

  1. Ted,
Edwin says y’all need to do the drive to Key West on your eastern trip. We have never been that far, but you drive to literally the southernmost point of the US. And on the way down or back up, you could stop in Cocoa Beach and eat at Florida’s Seafood Grill, which is the BEST shrimp place ever! Their slogan is “Where Shrimp Happens!” and it truly is so good!! And you could go to Jacksonville, my home town!! There are some beautiful lighthouses to see, too. The one in St. Augustine is gorgeous, as is the one at Ponce Inlet, close to Daytona.
As far as being home, I understand! It’s the little things…for Edwin, it’s his recliner in front of the TV with a Dr. Pepper and a Little Debbie cake roll!! 🙂 For me, it’s being completely unpacked and everything put back in order. I know Charlotte is loving being back in her studio, and I know Toffee is getting some major attention!!
Anyway, thanks again for the virtual ride; it was an awesome trip, and we look forward to the next one!

We will look into the drive down to Key West. That’s a looong way down the coast! My chair is feeling pretty good right now so I think we will be spending Christmas at home. It’s pretty hard for “Santa” to deliver outside of his zip code! So we will stay home. We will plan to leave on the east bound trip sometime in January. Charlotte has to be on an island off the coast of Savannah, GA for a two week class in February so we will be planning seveeral side trips on the way over there. Hope to see you and Edwin soon!

  2. At times I thought I was in the cab with y’all. I really enjoyed the “ride along” and look forward to your next adventure. Thanks !

  3. Man, I am worn plum out. What a trip, I think a great time was had by all !! But, I am sure glad to be home – safe and sound.
I agree with Elizabeth, Key West is a must see on our next trip. I know a couple of good ‘ole boys there on Duvall Street that run a little two pump, full service Shell station. Let me tell you, those boys in Williams are beginners in the rip off business compared with these two.
You guys get rested up and let us know when we can start packing for the next adventure.

It was good having you along on the trip. You always bring in a different perspective on things that makes everything interesting. We have already set one of the stops for the east bound trip. We will be in Savannah, GA in February at a painting school for two weeks. I’m trying to figure out how many times I can get down to Paula Dean’s Cafe in two weeks. My goal is to try everything on the menu at least once! We’ll let you know when we will be packing up the old truck and leave you a space in the back!
